Гуманитарные ведомости ТГПУ им. Л. Н. Толстого № 1 (33), июль 2020 г. 195 The romantic idea about the closer ties between a child and nature,i.e. rustic landscape with forests, meadows, farms and steadings, were, the more dominantthe ties people had with urban centers became in school textbooks of the mid-19 th century. We couldfindsuch rural scenes within the majority of American, English, German, Austrian and Swiss editions. Ruth Elson, John Ahier, Martin Nordeborg and Ulrich Pantle studied some aspects of such a trend and madegeneral conclusions about the wide popularity of the rustic approach as the criterion for textual and visual choices of texts and imagesinto the reading and visual elementary school canons. Ruth Elson wrote in 1964 about the rustics idea to be dominant in the 19 th century manuals prepared and printed in the USA; and her thesishad been definingour perception of main trends in schoolbooks evolutionyet [10].
