In many other textbooks (for example, printed in the UK or Russia) the urban realities became images of the unusual extraordinary context for the people living in these states. In any way urban images were instructive, environmental, symbolic ways for guide, model, value education invented into the reading books. The basements of such pictures or icons lied not only in social but also in mental practices.Both of them had educational purports, reasons and destinations. In order to trace the ways these images played we needed to look at the strategies of communication via the urban idea passed through textual and visual elements, their composition, scale of objects, their relatedness, and hierarchy. We needed to find what the textbooks sold/advertised/proclaimed; whom and why the appeal of the city’s textual and visual images was addressed to (adult, child, community, etc.); to reconstruct the contentsand structures of the urban messages and the planned students’ response to it. Doing it, we would be able to see what the urban message was trying to achieve; methods of “urban (non)seducing” the reader/user (child, adult) used by the different school books compilers and designers. Sources Thispaperstudied three groups of the 19 th century elementary school textbooks. 1) the books that werethe standard schoolbooks for many Russian schools in the 19 th century: Konstantin Ushinsky’s Children’s World ( Detsky Mir , 1861), Native Word ( Rodnoe Slowo , 1869, 1898); Nicolas Korff’ Our Friend ( Nash Drug , 1882); 2) German-language schoolbooks used by Ushinsky and Korff as the sources for their manuals: Friedrich Philipp Wilmsen. Der deutsche Kinderfreund, 1832, 1842; Ignaz Thomas Scherr. Erstes Schulbuchlein, 1849; Carl Friedrich Lauckhard Orbis pictus. Bilderbuch zur Anschauung und Belehrung, 1857-1860; Friedrich Harder. Theoretisch-praktisches Handbuch für den Anschauungsunterricht, 1858; Hermann Wagner Entdeckungsreisen in der Heimat, 1866; 3) English-language schoolbooks used by Ushinsky and Korff as the sources for their manuals: Edward Hughes Reading’s Lessons . London, 1855-1858 (there was to be five volumes but the last volume had not been printed. About first two volumes Ushinsky wrote that it is an excellent manual that he would be very glad to transfer to Russian audience); Robert James Mann Lessons in General Knowledge .
